Akash Deep was the standout performer for India in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, helping the team, captained by Shubman Gill, win by 336 runs. The 28-year-old fast bowler, originally from Bihar and representing Bengal in domestic cricket, claimed ten wickets in that match. With such a strong showing, he is expected to play in the third Test at Lord’s.
The hardships faced by Akash Deep during his early cricketing journey were brought to light by former Bengal coach Arun Lal.
According to Lal, Akash lived in a very basic dormitory provided by the Cricket Association of Bengal. The dormitory was known for its cramped space and lack of cleanliness. Despite these challenges, no complaints were ever made by Akash about his stay there.
Lal shared that in all the years he coached Akash, he never once heard him grumble about the food or facilities. He said the place was in such bad shape he worried it could make people sick.
Despite these tough conditions, Lal noticed Akash’s natural talent early on. He said that when Akash was in the list of players being considered for Bengal, he immediately stood out for his skill.
Arun Lal described Akash as someone with real speed, stamina, and strength. What impressed him most was Akash’s attitude—he worked hard without complaining.
He also praised Akash’s dedication to training. Even back in his village, Akash would run up hills surrounded by forest to build his fitness. Lal said these efforts showed how committed he was to improving himself, even without proper facilities.
Akash Deep’s Stunning Spell Shakes England; Root’s Dismissal Sparks Debate
India’s fast bowler Akash Deep, brought into the playing XI after Jasprit Bumrah was rested, delivered a remarkable performance in the second innings of the Edgbaston Test. By the close of Day 4, England’s score stood at 72 for 3, with two of those wickets having been claimed by Akash.
One of his most talked-about deliveries was the one that bowled Joe Root. The ball moved in sharply and crashed into Root’s stumps, leaving fans and experts amazed. Dismissing a batter of Root’s caliber in such a fashion is a rare sight.
However, the dismissal wasn’t without controversy. Soon after Root was declared out, some viewers and commentators began questioning the legality of the delivery.
Former England cricketer Alison Mitchell, speaking on BBC Test Match Special, pointed out that Akash’s back foot appeared to land just outside the return crease – possibly by around two inches – which would make the delivery illegal under MCC Law 21.5.1.
Although Akash’s front foot was well within the popping crease, it was his back foot that raised concerns. Some fans criticized the umpires for missing the detail.
According to MCC Law 21.5.1, for a delivery to be valid, the bowler’s back foot must stay within the return crease without stepping on or over it. If the foot touches or goes outside that line, it should be declared a no-ball.
Commenting on the incident, Ravi Shastri, who was also on commentary, defended the delivery. He stated that Akash’s foot appeared to be within the legal limit, and no violation had taken place.
Joe Root didn’t have the best game. He scored only 22 in the first innings and was dismissed for just 6 in the second, making it a disappointing match for the England veteran.
